Europa Universalis IV: Art of War Paradox Development Studios ups the stakes with the latest and third expansion from Europa Universalis IV – The Art of War. Centered on the 30 Years War and bubbling political instability between church and state, this expansion features improved gameplay mechanics that’s puts warfare at the forefront of your quest for domination and triumph. War never changes. That is, unless you pick up The Art of War expansion to Europa Universalis IV, in which case war has just changed a great deal. Paradox once again has taken an excellent product and made it even better, with an expansion that adds a great deal of color to the events of the game (particularly the 30 Years War), dramatically alters and improves the game map, and upgrades the production model to reduce micromanagement and leave you to what brought you here: conquest. Even though the concept of 'Try before you buy' is a noble one, I never thought it'd be something that would work with Paradox DLC expansions. Depending on which game we're talking about (and which expansion) the changes that come with the premium content aren't always obvious, and their effect on the wider game can often be subtle.

Paradox themselves seem to think trying DLC out before you buy it is worth exploring, however, as they've today announced that owners of Europa Universalis IV get to try out one piece of DLC for free for an entire week, starting right now.

The DLC they've chosen is The Art of War, EU4's fourth expansion that released in 2014. This follows on from a similar promotion they did in January where Mandate of Heaven was available to play for free. In our view Art pf War is one of the more essential expansions for the game, especially for European playthroughs; make sure you check out our EU4 DLC guide for the full summary of what this brings to the game. In short though, lots of good war-themed bits, and some interesting event change that make the mid-late game more interesting.

In order to access the DLC you need to log into your Paradox Account via the in-game launcher, then go to the DLC list and make sure Art of War is ticked. You can then play with the DLC until around noon (CET) on Monday 4th March, unless you purchase it.

Some other things to note:

  • If you already own this expansion, then there's no compensation unfortunately. You'll have to wait until they do this with one you don't own.
  • Existing save games can be continued as normal with the DLC enabled, however if you start a new game with this DLC then you won't be able to continue that play-through until you purchase. Or until a new major patch breaks all the saves anyway.

It's an interesting premise, but again, my earlier concerns as to how much you'll be able to 'notice' of the new pack still remain. Art of War is a good choice I guess. I'd be very interested in knowing how this promotion is doing for them overall, and where they decide to take it. Maybe we'll see if for other games as well?

A Quick Guide to Northgard DLC

11 Sep 20200

The team at the Paradox Development Studio announces that it is working on a new expansion for Europa Universalis IV, called Art of War, which is designed to improve, as the name implies, the conflict focused mechanics of the grand strategy title.

The studio explains that the new content is 'centered on the 30 Years War and bubbling political instability between church and state, this expansion features improved gameplay mechanics that’s puts warfare at the forefront of your quest for domination and triumph.'

Europa Universalis IV is designed to allow players to choose any country that existed in the world of the game and then guide it towards glorious victory or devastating defeat.

The 30 Years War was a major political and religious conflict and Paradox will use a range of unique mechanics and events to simulate how fast it drew in all the major powers of Europe and how it devastated the continent.

The combat system of the grand strategy game is redesigned and the new features are designed to allow the player to 'sortie from sieges, transfer occupation to allies and give objectives to your subjects and allies. Entire Fleets can now be upgraded with one click, you can now mothball fleets to avoid paying maintenance, and your fleets can be set to automatically transport armies.'

A new March system allows powerful countries to take vassals and transform them into military focused defensive areas that can stop the advance of a rival, at the cost of a lot of their tax revenue, and better diplomacy means that gamers can now sell ships, enforce new types of peace options and even declare war to support a rebel faction in a rival country.

Art of War for Europa Universalis IV will also include a new option to abandon cores and to build armies faster, with just one click.

As the expansion will be launched the development team at Paradox is also working on a major patch for the title which will introduce an entirely new rebel mechanic, offer the option to grant autonomy to one province, improves the Cardinal system and introduces an entirely new game map.

More information about the core mechanics of the new content will be offered via developer diaries in the coming weeks.

The Paradox Development Studios is not saying exactly when Art of War for Europa Universalis IV will be launched or how much the expansion is set to cost.
